How It's Treated:

Male pelvic health issues are treated based on what symptoms you are experiencing and what your Doctor of Physical Therapy finds in your exam. Often we find imbalances in the pelvic floor, hips, core, and glutes in most of our male patients. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will determine which muscles are imbalanced, calm your symptoms down, and address the root causes of your problem using our signature 3-step method to return you to all the activities you love!

STep 1: Breakdown

  1. Determine root causes of your symptoms or pain
  2. Calm painful symptoms if applicable
  3. Address any pelvic floor, abdominal, or hip/glute muscle tension causing symptoms or pain through hands-on therapy and exercises

STep 2: Build Up

  1. Address root causes of your symptoms or pain
  2. Retrain muscle imbalances to prevent symptoms or pain from returning
  3. Strengthen pelvic floor muscles, hips/glutes, and core for long-term relief

Step 3: Be Confident

  1. Add back activities that previously caused your symptoms or pain like prolonged sitting, standing, or walking
  2. Return to physical activity like running, weight lifting, and exercise
  3. Go back to enjoying intimacy

FAQs

Do men have pelvic floors too?
Do men have pelvic floors too?

Yes! If you have a pelvis, you have a pelvic floor. In men, the pelvic floor muscles support bladder and bowel function, help with sexual health, and provide stability for the core. Just like women, men can experience pelvic floor dysfunction, which is why pelvic floor therapy can be beneficial for them too. We regularly treat men for urinary leakage, constipation, pain in the lower abdomen, groin, low back, perineum, testicles, and for sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, painful ejaculation or erection).

How do you assess the pelvic floor for men?
How do you assess the pelvic floor for men?

Your therapist will give you options for the exam to ensure your comfort. The assessment may involve an external examination of the pelvic floor muscles at the perineum and observation of the external anal sphincter. However, the most direct and gold-standard examination is through the intra-rectal canal.

Don’t worry! Your therapist will explain every step of the exam before and during the process to make sure you feel comfortable and fully understand the exam procedure.
