How It's Treated:

Bowel issues may be caused by a variety of factors such as straining, constipation, bloating, pelvic floor weakness, pelvic floor overactivity, dietary limitations, hydration changes, stress, pelvic floor muscle tear, and more! Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will do an assessment to determine what are the root causes of your bowel issues. Once your Doctor of Physical Therapy has done this, she will target any areas of poor functioning muscles to retrain them using our signature 3-step method.

STep 1: Breakdown

  1. Determine root causes of your bowel issues
  2. Address any pelvic floor, abdominal, or hip/glute muscle tension causing pain through hands-on therapy and exercises
  3. Implement lifestyle changes for long-term relief

STep 2: Build Up

  1. Address root causes of your bowel issues
  2. Retrain muscle imbalances for proper bowel function
  3. Strengthen pelvic floor muscles, hips/glutes, and core for long-term solutions

Step 3: Be Confident

  1. Return to activities pain-free or symptom-free that previously caused discomfort or leakage
  2. Go back to physical activity like running, weight lifting, or exercise

FAQs

Can pelvic floor therapy help with constipation?
Can pelvic floor therapy help with constipation?

Yes! Constipation is often caused by multiple factors, including hydration, fiber intake, lifestyle habits, gut health, stress, and the physical mechanics of bowel movements. In pelvic PT, we’ll assess each of these factors to identify what might be affecting your regularity.

Often, pelvic floor tightness can make it difficult to have a bowel movement. In some cases, patients think they are pushing to poop, but they’re actually squeezing their muscles closed, making it even harder—this is known as dyssynergia. Pelvic floor therapy can help address these issues to improve bowel function. We also work very closely with gut health specialists and Registered Dietitians to ensure you get the best results.
